CELEBRATING THE SYNERGY BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA
MSU Radiology hosts world-class symposium
SEPTEMBER 6, 2002
Celebrating the Synergy between Industry and Academia symposium, initiated and moderated by Dr. E. James Potchen, University Distinguished Professor and Chair of Radiology, was held September 6, 2002 in the Radiology Building and the James Henry Executive Management Center. The purpose of the inaugural event was to celebrate the remarkable spirit of cooperation between the industrial and medical complexes that have led to revolutionary advances in diagnostic imaging. The first MSU Synergy Award was established to recognize the contributions of select industry leaders whose leadership has had an impact on academia. This year’s award was presented to Frank Low of Picker Nuclear-Philips lineage and, currently, Harvest Partners, Inc., in recognition of his 50 years in the field of diagnostic imaging and his contributions to academic radiology.
The symposium was broadly recognized by more than 80 in attendance from 18 states, Germany, and the Netherlands as an historic event in all of radiology, and, especially, MSU Radiology, by being able to assemble so many prominent heads of academic radiology departments and all the principal industrial leaders in the field of diagnostic imaging. Dr. Potchen stated that the event provided the leaders of industry and academia the unique opportunity to share their views and appreciation of others in a non-competitive milieu.
Following the lead off remarks from President Peter McPherson and Dr. Potchen, 11 chairpersons from prominent academic radiology departments, five MSU deans, a basic science chairperson, and a leader from industry provided formal reflections and personal insights into the beneficial aspects of the industry-academia relationship, thereby enhancing future synergies between the two. Dr. Federick Keller, Chair of the Charles Dotter Interventional Institute at Oregon Health Sciences Universities, and William Cook, Chair and CEO of Cook Group Incorporated, presented examples of synergy between industry and academia.
From the academic side, the symposium was attended by Trustees Donald Nugent and Dolores Cook, President McPherson, Vice Presidents David Gift, Robert Huggett, and Chuck Webb, six MSU deans, Honors College Director Ronald Fisher, several MSU chairpersons, heads of other prominent academic radiology departments, and radiology faculty and staff. The MSU presenters were Dean Mariette Baba, Social Science; Dean Glenn Davis, Human Medicine; Dean Robert Duncan, Business; Dean Janie Fouke, Engineering; Dean William Strampel, Osteopathic Medicine; and Chairperson William Spielman, Physiology.
The chairpersons of academic radiology departments, who provided reflections from academia, were Dr. Jay Beauchamp, Johns Hopkins University; Dr. Wm. Bradley, UCSD Medical center; Dr. Wm. Casarella, Emory University School of Medicine; Dr. Laurie Fajardo, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; Dr. Joseph Lee, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Dr. Terry Ovitt, University of Arizona; Dr. Carl Ravin, Duke University School of Medicine; Dr. Stephen Swenson, Mayo Clinic; Dr. James Thrall, Massachusetts General Hospital; and Dr. James Youker, Medical College of Wisconsin.
