Michigan State University and Cardinal Health Corp Collaborate on PET Cyclotron Project
October 2, 2002, East Lansing, MI & Woodland Hills, CA
MSU's
Department of Radiology, in a joint effort with Cardinal
Health Corp., have installed a General Electric cyclotron as part of the
$9.8 million addition to the Radiology Building. The new cyclotron produces
flourodeoxyglucose (F-18), a radiopharmaceutical used in Positron Emission
Tomography (PET) imaging. PET imaging is particularly useful for detecting
early-stage tumors, for measuring the effectiveness of cancer therapies, and
for assessing coronary artery disease and degenerative diseases of the brain.
PET scans and the cyclotron-produced radioisotopes provide a unique way to
visualize the biological function in human beings. Patients in Michigan and
the Midwest can benefit from the availability of these isotopes for diagnostic
imaging and treatment.
