Brief Autism Background
Autism is a complex behavioral disorder manifesting in infancy or early
childhood, although its origin may be genetic or prenatal. Its clinical
presentation is characterized by impairments in social interaction and
communication, and by repetitive, stereotyped behaviors. In recent years,
the number of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorders has
increased to a significant degree. The reasons for this increase are not
fully understood but are thought to be due at least in part to expanded
diagnostic criteria, greater public and professional awareness, and increased
availability of intervention programs. The possibility of a true increase
in incidence cannot be dismissed. Genetic and non-genetic factors that
contribute to autism are largely unknown and are currently the focus of
intense epidemiologic, clinical, and basic science investigation. There
are many informative autism web sites available for further information.
