Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique which provides superior pictures of the body’s internal structures without the use of radiation. These images are produced using magnetic fields and radio waves. The scan causes no pain. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is capable of diagnosis and assessment of many diseases earlier than other diagnostic techniques.

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging facility at Michigan State University employs General Electric imaging systems which produce superior images.
The MRI units serve both outpatient and ambulance-transported hospital inpatients. The MRI unit is located in the southeast portion of the Clinical Center on the East Lansing campus.
PREPARING FOR YOUR EXAM
In most instances no advance preparation is necessary for an MR scan. Upon arrival, you will be asked to complete a medical information form. It is important that you inform the technologist of any past surgeries and if you have any metal implants such as a cardiac pacemaker or neurostimulator.
You will be asked to remove all metal such as jewelry, watches or hairpins. Credit or bank cards should be left in the patient dressing room as the magnet will erase information contained on the cards. A locker is provided for these items.
You will be asked to change into a patient hospital gown and to lay on a couch-type bed for the MR scan. The scan couch will then be moved into the magnet. An intercom system allows communication with the technologist performing your MR study. It may be necessary to use a contrast agent in certain MR examinations. The process will be fully explained should it be required for your exam.
After the exam, your study will be reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist (a physician who specializes in diagnostic imaging). The report of your study will be promptly received by your physician.
THINGS TO REMEMBER
Don’t forget to inform the technologist when you arrive for you exam if:
- You have a pacemaker
- You have any metal implants
- You have a neurostimulator (Tens-unit)
